Sami Khatib studierte an der Georg-August-Universität Göttingen und der Freien Universität Berlin Philosophie und Publizistik- und Kommunikationswissenschaft und promovierte 2013 mit einer Arbeit über die Figur des Messianischen im Denken Walter Benjamins. Nach einer Forschungsresidenz an der Jan van Eyck Academie Maastricht gehörte er 2015 zu den Gründungsmitgliedern des Beirut Institute for Critical Analysis and Research (BICAR). Seit 2019 ist er assoziierter Forscher im Andrew W. Mellon Drittmittelprojekt „Extimacies: Critical Theory from the Global South“ an der American University in Cairo. Sein laufendes Forschungsprojekt zur „Ästhetik des ‚Sinnlich-Übersinnlichen’“ untersucht die ästhetische Dimension und globale Reichweite der Marxschen Entdeckung der Warenform. Seit dem Sommersemester 2021 ist er Vertretungsprofessor für Kunstwissenschaft und Medienphilosophie.
